The NO GOndola Campaign is a group of concerned citizens in the Bow Valley and beyond who are deeply disturbed about the proposed development of a gondola up the south side of Mt. Lady Macdonald in Canmore.
Key Features
3 kms long rising 3,000 feet up Canmore’s Mt. Lady Macdonald
A day lodge, trail networks, viewing platforms, a suspension bridge & related utility infrastructure
Located in an active wildlife corridor in Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park
Could be approved under the Alberta Government’s All-Season Resorts Act (ASRA)
Key Concerns
Loss of critical wildlife habitat for bears, elk, wolves, bighorn sheep & more
Cumulative impact of multiple large & concurrent developments in the Bow River valley
Potential removal of more than 17 football fields (about 13.9 hectares) of Provincial Park land
Reduced wildlife movement connectivity in the active wildlife corridor between Banff National Park & Kananaskis Country
Precedent-setting risk to all Alberta Parks (per the All-Season Resorts Act)
More traffic/parking problems/noise/waste etc. in an area already highly stressed by over-tourism
Possible property tax increases due to higher town infrastructure costs (roads, emergency response, wastewater treatment, etc.)
Unnecessary & redundant: 3 other gondolas are already located nearby in Banff and at the Sunshine & Lake Louise ski resorts
Albertans already oppose development in parks & public lands
Could see up to an estimated 300,000 annual users violating a highly fragile alpine environment
